# General skills

The built-in General skills every agent has, and what each one does.

The **General** group holds the built-in skills below. Enable one from the **Pre-attached Skills** tab of **Add Skill**, and see which are active in the agent's **Skills** panel. See [Enable a built-in skill](/ai-workbench-qore/platform-resources/skill-library.md#enable-a-built-in-skill). In the Skills panel, the group header shows how many are active, for example **8/15 active**.

| Skill                        | What it does                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    |
| ---------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **AI Reasoning** | Uses AI to think through complex topics, make decisions, or generate summaries. Suited to reasoning and language tasks. |
| **Web Search** | Runs a web search through the language model with web search enabled, to retrieve up-to-date information. It takes a query and optional context, and returns a summary of the results. |
| **Web Crawl** | A system skill that crawls web pages. |
| **Knowledge Search** | Searches the knowledge connected to the agent for relevant answers or references. Use it when the information is stored in your data sources. |
| **Knowledge Lexical Search** | A system skill that searches connected knowledge by matching words rather than meaning. |
| **Knowledge Graph Search** | Answers questions about entities and relationships in connected governance knowledge graphs, such as products, policies, pricing, and required documents. It is the only skill that reads a [governed graph](/ai-workbench-qore/control-center/govern/governed-graph.md). Off by default; enable it explicitly. |
| **Generate Custom Skill** | Generates a name, description, code, and input and output schemas for a JavaScript or Python skill. Use it to create or revise a coded skill with AI assistance. |
| **Run JavaScript** | Runs JavaScript in a secure sandbox. Suited to complex calculations, data transformation, and logic that reasoning alone can't handle. |
| **Run Python** | Runs Python in a secure sandbox. Suited to data analysis, math, and complex logic. |
| **Display Code Block** | Shows a block of code with syntax highlighting. |
| **Show Message** | Shows the user a message in markdown. Best for quick updates or progress messages, not for final answers. |
| **View Uploaded Files** | Lists the files uploaded in the current session, with their names, details, and upload times. |
| **Create File** | Writes a plain text or markdown file to the execution document store, and returns the document ID. |
| **Import External Files** | Adds external files to the conversation's uploaded documents from pre-signed URLs, without loading their contents into the current message. Later skills, such as document search or extraction, can then use them. |
| **Get Current Time** | A system skill that returns the current time. |
| **Wait** | A system skill that pauses before the agent continues. |

{% hint style="info" %}
**Knowledge skills need knowledge.** Knowledge Search, Knowledge Lexical Search, and Knowledge Graph Search are left out of a run when the agent has no knowledge attached.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
**Knowledge Search or Knowledge Lexical Search?** Knowledge Search finds passages by meaning, so it suits questions phrased in the user's own words. Lexical search matches the words themselves, so it suits exact terms such as product codes, policy numbers, or names.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
**Run JavaScript and Run Python are not your own code.** The agent writes and runs code as it works. To give the agent a fixed piece of logic that you wrote, add a **JavaScript Code** or **Python Code** skill from the Skill Library tab instead. See [Skill Library](/ai-workbench-qore/platform-resources/skill-library.md#skills-you-configure).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.uptiq.ai/ai-workbench-qore/platform-resources/skill-library/general-skills.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
